BIOGRAPHY
Mihayo Kallaye (b. 1996, Tanzania) is a multidisciplinary artist based in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. He joined Nafasi Art Academy to study contemporary art after graduating with a BSc in Environmental Sciences and Management. His work encompass a wide range of media, including fabrics, photography, video, tattooing and found objects. With a focus on the post-colonial situation in Africa, decolonization restitution and sustainablity, his work delves into African history, spirituality, and politics. In his creative practice, Kallaye incorporates various artistic techniques, such as borrowing texts from music and books, utilizing drawings, creating prints through digital collage and engaging in the process of stitching. Rooted in experimental research, his works invite audiences to engage with his thoughts and ideas on the aforementioned topics. Kallaye’s artwork has been exhibited in notable venues, including the East Africa Biennale in 2019, the National Museum of Tanzania in 2020, Circle Art Gallery in Kenya in 2021, Galerie Atelier III in Barmstedt, Germany in 2022, and The Africa Centre in London, United Kingdom in 2022.
